More about the system
The box is made from 3/4inch MDF board. Its 8.0 cubic feet. Has a 105sq inch port tuned to 42hz. The head unit is a JVC (model unknown). But provides a decent signal to my line driver. The goal of this system was to not only be ear-blistering loud, but to incorprate some inteligence to my system. The original plan was to hook up 4 Kicker compVR's with about 2000 watts. But the more i though about it, the more i decided to just buy one LOUD sub, and post some GOOD SPL numbers with that. I currently compete in the most competitive class of subs in my area. But it sure is really nice to go out there and post almost 4db's higher then the second place in the class. On a day when the mic wasnt friendly to anyone, I was only a half a DB from breaking my 150db goal. Currently, I am testing the difference in using just 1 of the amps at 2 ohms as opposed to using both amps, each at 4 ohms. Well the real test will come on June 7th when I compeat again... Wish me luck!!
My car audio history
My first introductery to car audio was when I was around 13-14 years old. Jer's camaro was just beggin for some subs, and ever since then i've been hooked. When I was 16, I saved up money for my own car stereo. I bought and payed for a pair of pyle 12's and an un-named amplifier. Unfortunatly I didnt know much about stereo's at the time, and it sounded horrable when first hooked up. So i decided to sell the amp, and buy a legacy 600 watt amp (cheap). It deffinatly was an improvement, however things still didnt sound up to par. Eventully (after i got my licence) I decided to upgrade. I asked my parents for a new sub at Benchmark. They were selling at the time, brand-new round kicker solobaric 15's for only . So again, out with the old, and in with the new. The 12's were sold to a friend, and My 15 had a new home. At this point i made the biggest money blunder I have made to date. I bought a custom box from benchmark totaling over . The box was NOT custom. It was rather just a rectangle box, and was worth maybe ... Oooops, never made that mistake again! Well a year went by, and things still sounded good. But I wanted more... So i asked for a second woofer that christmas, and sure enough, now i had to make 2 15inch woofers fit in a trunk! Not cool... Eventuly I sold that legacy amp for a 1200 watt saphire series from legacy. The crome threw me off, i thought it was a decent amp... Again, i was young and stupid. Months later i wised up, and dumped that amp for a sony explode 1000 watt class D. The amp only cost me a few bucks, and it was deffinatly worth it. Still not the greatest amp, but better then legacy! Again, a few months pass, and i am given the opportunity to switch my car (chevy lumina) to our chevy blazer. That switch increased my DB rating from 142 up to 145! But was i satisfied?? HECK NO! At this point, just starting college, I didnt have a ton of money to invest in the car stereo. But i researched... And I finally decided to get HUGE bass, from only 1 sub!. So getting on ebay, and draining almost of my parents credit cards (half i gave them the money for, the other half I'm currently playing back) I managed to buy a pair of JBL 1200.1 amps, and cerwin-vega stroker 18inch subwoofer. Maybe the loudest subwoofer ever made. Thus leading me to where I am right now system wise. It is truely alot to be proud of to see where I came from, and where I am right now. I take pride in it anyways...
Right now the talk in the car audio world around here is on Jer's wall. Its a sick, sick piece of beauty. I cant WAIT to test it and see what kind of numbers that thing will produce!!!
